2018 Reflections & Moving Forward into 2019

2018 was a pretty good year for me…

The majority of my 2018 was involved in Chimera madness and living life in the Birmingham School of Jewellery. At the start of the year, we moved onto the final module, and all of our hard work over the year was to be brought together into a final collection, or for me, a final film. I am really proud of my final film.

Filming - Suzanne (31)

The Chimera Artist had unsteady beginnings. Back in September 2017 I started off my degree not knowing what I was doing! I then ran with ideas about supernatural creatures infecting humans, and using jewellery in film to present this, and everything began to unfurl… but I soon ended up in a puddle of confusion, and woe in the second module because I did not know what I was! Was I jeweller? A fine artist? A filmmaker? A costume-maker? A weirdo who doesn’t really fit into any boxes?
Probably that last one, and in the end it didn’t really matter. I realised that I just needed to develop my stories, allow the costumes I was making to evolve alongside the stories, and basically just make the thing! I stopped worrying about what other people thought, and I stopped worrying about trying to fit in with everybody else.

I did make the thing! and I am really proud of my achievement. I managed to develop a narrative, construct four large-scale costumes, organise and collaborate with five actors (six if you include myself!), across four different locations, shoot all four interviews successfully, compile extra footage, arrange and edit a complete film, while creating supporting material, and making merch!

It was a crazy few months, but oh so worth it, and in the end worthy of a Masters degree with a distinction!!!

Chimeras and degrees took up the majority of my 2018 time, but I also…

Completed 31 drawings for #Inktober 2018

Started two new blogs to explore my love of writing, animals and tea: Fluffy Jellyfish, and In My Teacup Today.

Added 2 hamsters, 11 rats, a praying mantis, a scorpion, and a tank of sea monkeys into my family…

And at the start of 2019 I graduated!!

2019 is going to be a great year, and I am really excited to start putting all my new Chimera, illustration, and arty plans into action…

Stay tuned…

Much arty love.
